Recess Creative Play

As we begin this year, we want to let you know about some changes to recess. In the past, our approach was to avoid any activity where students might get hurt—physically or emotionally. However, we recognize that children need opportunities to play and learn through natural consequences. When we remove those chances, we also take away valuable learning experiences.

We would like to provide students with an environment that is less structured and has fewer restrictions on play.  To that end, we are adjusting our mindset to give students who need more physical outlets the space to do so in safe and supervised ways. For example, if a student chooses to stand in a puddle, they will experience the natural consequence of having wet socks for the rest of the day. Another example would be allowing students to have a snowball fight in a specific area. That way students could choose to participate or not.

Our staff are in favor of these changes, as they give students healthy outlets for energy and encourage positive play. We believe this will also help create a better learning environment in the classroom. As new games/activities come up we will seek to approach them with this mindset.
