Reading Month

“Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

Since March is the month of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, what better way to engage in month-long fun activities? This year’s Reading Month committee has put together a month full of trivia, reading, and writing activities to stimulate creative thinking.

“You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.” (from Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss)
There is a list of activities on the attached calendar. Note the fun dress-up days.
Next week Thursday is our first dress up day. You should wear red and blue to be like thing 1 and Thing 2! No fancy costumes required!
As well, there are a number of extra events, which can be done at home.

Elementary Events:

Reading Fish - Students will track their reading on Dr. Seuss style fish! They can write the title of their book on the front of the fish and their name on the back. They will then add it to the fishbowl that is in each classroom.

Poster Contest - On their own time, grades 4-6 students can participate in the poster contest. This year, the students will create a Take One Book Recommendations poster. They are to be handed into Miss VanderDeen by Tuesday, March 30th.

Sock Decorating Contest – On their own time, K-3 students can participate in the sock decorating contest. They will choose a sock design from their classroom and will decorate the socks using whatever materials they desire (ie. markers, paint, pompoms, etc.). This activity can be done from home! On the front of their sock they will write the title of their favourite book and on the back of the sock should be their name.

Bingo Boards- To further encourage reading at home, we have created 3 bingo boards that students can complete to earn stickers! There will be a bingo board for K-1, 2-3, and 4-6. Each student will only receive 1 bingo board throughout the month. If they complete the entire bingo board, they can return it to school to earn a prize!

Administration Reading- During the week of March 22-26th, a member of the administration will be dropping by the classrooms to read to them.

Junior and Senior High Events:

Book in a Bottle- Guess the book which is in the jar and enter your name to receive a prize!

Reinvent the cover contest - Students from junior and senior high will have the opportunity to put their artistic skills to work. They will submit altered genre book covers for Dr. Seuss books.

Poetry Contest- Using their imagination, junior and senior high students will use the words from Hop on Pop and/or Green Eggs and Ham to create a new story/poem.

Meme Board –Students will get their imagination on board to create Dr. Seuss inspired memes.

Book Character Dress-Up Day – March 31, 2021

On our last day of Reading Month, we would like to encourage all students to dress up as a book character to celebrate reading! You have a whole month to brainstorm what character you would like to be, so start exercising your imagination!
