Reading Month

Reading Month November 2021

The hallways are being transformed with motivational signs encouraging students to read something out of this world! Reading Month has almost begun! This year we are looking at the universe as our theme. Try reading a book that is “out of this world” and stretch your imagination! There are a number of activities happening. Please see the calendar for details.

All grades are encouraged to participate in one way or another.

This coming week will see the launch of Reading Month with a virtual assembly. DEAR is happening on Thursday, November 4th.

Next week (November 8-12) we look forward to another DEAR day on Tuesday, November 9th.

Don’t forget about our contests!

Following is the list of events that are occurring during the month of November.

Elementary Events:

Reading Month Kick-Off Assembly -On the morning of Monday, November 1st, there will be a virtual assembly.

Reading Stars - Students will track their reading on stars! They can write the title of their book on the front of the star and their name on the back. They will then add it to the planet that will be supplied in each classroom.

Design a Way to the Moon Contest - On their own time, grades 4-6 students can participate in a “design your way to the moon” contest. They are to be handed into Miss VanderDeen by Wednesday, November 24th. More details, rules, and templates will be handed out to each class.

Rocket Ship Design Contest – On their own time, K-3 students can participate in the rocket ship design contest. They will choose a rocket body from their classroom (templates supplied) and will decorate the rocket using the package of ‘parts and pieces’. This activity can even be done from home! On the back of the ship should be their name, grade and teacher. Rockets can be handed into Paetra De Wit at any time but are due by Wednesday, November 24th. All rocket ships will be displayed by the Library!

Bingo Boards- To further encourage reading at home, we have created 3 bingo boards that students can complete to earn stickers! There will be a bingo board for K-1, 2-3, and 4-6. Each student will only receive 1 bingo board throughout the month. If they complete the entire bingo

board, they can return it to school to earn a prize! Prizes will be handed out to each classroom teacher.

Administration Reading- During the week of November 22-26th, a member of the administration will be dropping by the elementary classes to read to them.

Junior and Senior High Events:

Bookmark Contest: Grades 7-12’s contest this year is to create a space themed bookmark for the elementary students. The winners of the contest will have their bookmarks copied, printed, and laminated for all the elementary students to receive. Students can get a bookmark template from either Miss Larson or Mrs. Slaa. The template will be used to create your design on. The bookmark should be space themed, coloured completely, and have very little negative space. The bookmarks are due Friday, November 19th.

Book Bistro: Students have a month to read a book of their choice. On November 25th, they will be invited to Room 206 where they will be provided with a snack and an opportunity to discuss the books they have read. (lunch hour)

Blind Date with a Book: Students can choose a book to read without knowing the title or the cover. A short description on a wrapped book is the only clue the student will get! Once the book is read, it can be returned to Mrs. Slaa’s room and perhaps another student will choose to read it, once it is wrapped up again.

Whole School Events:

DEAR –DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) is where the students stop what they are doing, grab a book, and read for approximately 10-15 minutes.

Book Character Dress-Up Day – On the last Thursday of reading month, November 25th, students will be encouraged to dress up like a book character to celebrate reading!

Teacher Reading Swap – On November 17th, Teachers will be randomly assigned to go to another classroom and read to that class.
